NAON 40th Annual Congress Cancelled
In these unprecedented times, we are all faced with unprecedented situations, decisions and challenges. Every day NAON is proud to represent the meaningful work of orthopaedic nurses, and now more than ever we are honored to watch our community’s strength in action.
Though we would have loved to celebrate you and your work in person, NAON has been forced to cancel NAON Congress 2020 in Pittsburgh.
Please know that we are very disappointed that NAON Congress 2020 cannot proceed. As the global COVID-19 situation has evolved, we have closely monitored the impact to our community and the local Pittsburgh area. Our priority remains focused on the health and safety of our attendees and staff, as well as that of your loved ones and patients. Unfortunately, the coronavirus’s unprecedented and devastating impact has made it impossible to host NAON Congress 2020.
THE NAON FOUNDATION WILL BE EMAILING THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE REGISTERED WITH INFORMATION ABOUT A REFUND FOR THE GATEWAY CLIPPER EVENT.
STAY SAFE!

Make a Difference
As an orthopaedic nurse, you make a difference every workday. What if you want to make an even bigger impact and engage with other nurses beyond your workplace? NAON and the NAON Foundation offers numerous ways for you to play an influential role in shaping the future of orthopaedic care.
Volunteer – NAON becomes stronger every time a member chooses to share their time, skills, and expertise. There are endless ways you can use your orthopaedic nursing skills to improve patient care, support fellow nurses, build your leadership skills, and most importantly, transform the way the world cares for patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Through NAON, there is the Acquiring Interested Members Committee (AIM). The AIM committee strives to match the skills of interested members with volunteer positions within the organization. Reach out and volunteer with your chapter.
Impact your Orthopaedic Nursing Practice - The NAON Foundation needs your help by donating towards scholarships for nurse attendance at NAON’s annual congress. We hear from NAON members that their workplace is offering less and less financial support to attend educational seminars. At NAON’s annual congress, orthopaedic nurses have the opportunity to achieve the following:
Advance your Career - The NAON Foundation has created affiliations with universities’ online RN to BSN or MSN programs. These programs are highly recognized in the healthcare industry for offering outstanding programs for practicing nurses who are seeking to further their education. These affiliations allow choices for our members as potential opportunities to consider for returning back to school. In addition, our NAON members are able to receive a discount.
Decide to Give - Give to the NAON Foundation - The NAON Foundation offers you the only place in the world to give directly to nurses who advance musculoskeletal care and improve patient outcomes. One hundred percent of your donation is applied toward scholarships for orthopaedic nurses.
Your donation to the NAON Foundation, a national public, nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable organization, makes it possible to help nurses receive access to education, research, and professional development, improve patient care, and advance the orthopaedic nursing profession. Since 1994, the NAON Foundation has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to support orthopaedic nursing awards, grants, scholarships, and educational initiatives. Please consider giving a gift to help the next generation of orthopaedic nurses. Contributions are essential to create opportunities and empower the careers of skillful and compassionate orthopaedic nurse care givers.
Scholarships available through NAONFoundation.org
Research – Gigi Veillion Evidenced Based Practice Scholarship

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. (July 2019) – Herzing University today announced it is partnering with the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses (NAON) Foundation to promote excellence in orthopaedic nursing through education, research and leadership. Through the partnership, NAON members are eligible for tuition discounts on Herzing’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, in addition to select graduate nursing programs and post‐master’s certificate programs. The university also donated $2,500 to the NAON Foundation, which will be used to help provide members with nursing scholarships. “We’re excited to partner with Herzing University because education plays a vital role in advancing the profession of orthopaedic nursing,” said Cheryl Mains, President, NAON Foundation. “Many of our members are choosing to further their education, and we’re seeing an uptick in the number of registered nurses who decide to enroll in a BSN completion program. This partnership helps us make that goal a reality for NAON members across the country.” Herzing offers a variety of nursing pathways for individuals at any point in their career. The university’s RN to BSN program can be completed online in as little as 12 months. Additionally, Karilyn Van Oosten, SVP of Strategic Partnerships and Workforce Development at Herzing University, was appointed to the NAON Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “We’re thrilled to offer our nursing education expertise to the NAON Foundation through this partnership,” Van Oosten said. “As a career‐focused institution, we find that our students and graduates benefit from partnerships like this because it expands our network of professionals, employers and advisors.” Herzing is a transfer‐friendly university offering year‐round study and degree programs in nursing, healthcare, business and information technology. Thank you for including the NAON Foundation in your life.
The NAON Foundation was established to support the goals and mission of NAON by providing funding for grants and scholarships to advance the specialty of orthopaedic nursing through excellence in nursing practice, education, research and leadership.
The scope of orthopaedics is diverse, touching all ages across the life span and as the population ages, musculoskeletal injuries, disease and the wear and tear of everyday living are affecting the lives of many Americans. Ever-changing technology and the current healthcare economic challenges make resources for the advancement of orthopaedic patient care and orthopaedic nursing practice imperative. To meet this need the NAON Foundation will fund over $15,000 in new awards over the next three years for scholarships to help prepare orthopaedic nurses for the changes in both nursing practice and patient care.
Gifts to the NAON Foundation can make a difference in the lives of orthopaedic nurses today and in generations to come. Every donation helps the Foundation fulfill its mission by funding continuing education, scholarships, and leadership development training.
Tribute and Memorial Gifts
Make a gift in honor or memory of a special orthopaedic nurse, colleague, friend or family member.
The NAON Foundation is accepting gifts for the newly created Mary K Wollan Memorial Scholarship.
Mary K Wollan, RN, BAN, ONC passed on March 10, 2018. Mary K was elected to the NAON Board as Director and then 29th President 2008-2009. Her theme of Uniting the World of Orthopaedics was her mantra not only during her presidency but throughout her career as she brought the orthopaedic team together to serve patients. She was the chair of the 30th anniversary committee for NAON and continued this work until the present by organizing NAON memorabilia and writing the history pages on the website. Locally she was the president and mainstay of the Twin Cities Chapter of NAON. Known as one of the longest running orthopaedic nursing conferences in the country Mary K chaired their well-known annual meeting for many years.
Mary K believed that education helps individuals to learn and grow and empowers them. She also believed it’s rewarding to play a small role in helping others to learn. Many orthopaedic nurses benefit from the NAON Foundation scholarships.
